Title | West End Junior and Infants School |
Description | An educational excavation was undertaken at West End Junior and Infants School, in 2009. The excavation was run by Dave Weldrake of WYAAS in partnership with Wakefield Museums Service and also involved excavations at Sacred Heart RC Primary School (PRN 9907), St Helen's CE (VA) JandI School (PRN 9910) and Grove Lea Primary School (PRN 9908). Approximately 200 school children took part. The project aimed to provide further evidence for the medieval period in Hemsworth. A trench, 1.0m by 8.0m, was opened although it was not bottomed though a 0.50m square sondage was taken down to a depth of 0.70m north east of the trench. The finds included several pieces of flint that may date to the prehistoric period, 19th century glass, medieval pottery and pieces of 20th century land drain. It is uncertain where the flints may have originated. |
