Description | An educational excavation was undertaken at Grove Lea Primary School, Hemsworth, in 2009. The excavation was run by Dave Weldrake of WYAAS in partnership with Wakefield Museums Service and also involved excavations at Sacred Heart RC Primary School (PRN 9907), St Helen's CE (VA) JandI School (PRN 9910) and West End Junior and Infants School (PRN 9909). Approximately 200 school children took part. The project aimed to provide further evidence for the medieval period in Hemsworth. A trench, 1.0m by 8.0m, was opened revealing made ground below the topsoil. The finds included a piece of blue and white 19th century pottery, 20th century brick and animal bone. |
