Description | In July 1999, Ed Dennison Archaeological Services (EDAS) undertook archaeological building recording at former Nos. 83 97 King Street, in advance of the re development of Kingsgate. The buildings comprised of an early 19th century domestic and retail group, and formerly occupied on the north side of King Street, at its junction with Oldgate. A number of the buildings were Grade II listed. The buildings were built in three phases (marked by straight joints visible in the front elevation) and constructed of coursed sandstone. They were of three storeys, with basement, and were occupied by shops, with the upper floors being used for storage or living accommodation. EDAS noted, at the start of the recording, that all of the buildings had been unoccupied for a number of years previous, and were in some state of decay; a number of the buildings also had ground floor shop front that had been heavily altered during the 20th century. The buildings have since been demolished, to make way for the construction of the Kingsgate Centre (see WYAAS GIS). For further detail please see the full report (EDAS, 2000), a copy of which is on file at West Yorkshire HER. |
