Description | Lee Briggs School was built during the late 19th century and is built of brick with a slate roof to 1 storey. It is of 3 principal blocks characterised by tall facades with hipped roofs, linked by 2 lower ranges with pitched roofs. This forms a symmetrical layout. The central block comprises 4 bays separated by rusticated brick pilasters. The 2 outer bays contain squared 8 pane windows with projecting sills and plain surrounds. The middle 2, meanwhile, are made up of similar windows but with recessed arched heads, and with pointed, gothic gables above. The adjoining ranges either side comprise 2 2 light mullioned windows with 2 panes each. To the left and right respectively, are entrances faced with stone. In both cases, steps lead up to a doorway with chamfered jambs and a chamfered arched lintel with projecting keystone. Above, the entrance is finished with a shouldered gable. On either side are large rectangular blocks with tall, 2 light windows facing the road. The left and right hand returns contain 6 bays of tall windows in a 3:1:2 configuration from the road. Each has a shouldered stone lintel and projecting sill. The school is included in the Local Buildings List (2008) for Wakefield. |
