Description | Town End Farm was built in the 1st half of the 18th century of millstone grit sandstone with quoins and a pitched stone slate roof. The building is of two distinct phases, the initial farmhouse of 3 bays and a laithe added later in the 18th century. The adjoining laithe has central cart entries on both sides, with tie stone jambs and segmental arches, while mistal doorways are positioned next to the gable ends. A straight joint contrasts the 2 distinct phases between the house and laithe. The main house is of 3 bays on the ground floor with windows characterised by post and lintel surrounds. Above, on the 1st floor is an 11 light chamfered mullion window, again with post and lintel surrounds. Finally, the gable end of the farmhouse has 2 3 light chamfered mullion windows next to one another at 1st floor level. In the early 1990s the building was renovated, the extent, however, remains unclear (Hall 1993). |
