TitleIngs Lodge, Woodhead Road
DescriptionIngs Lodge is a stone house dating to the 17th century, to which a laithe was added in 1830. The house faces east and is of 2 storeys.
The 17th century building is of 2 cells, and had an end lobby entrance. The original door at the north east angle has a square head and chamfered surround. It opened against the side of a firehood: This has now been removed, but the spine beams still break on the line of the bressumer and the fire window survives in the west wall. This window has a single tall light with a round head. The firehood heated the main room, the housebody. This was lit by recessed splayed mullion windows in both side walls.
The western cell was probably unheated originally, and the low lights of the mullioned window here suggest use as a service room or rooms rather than as a parlour. The break in the masonry between the cells is probably the result of recent rebuilding rather than a sign of 2 periods of construction.
In 1830 a laithe was added to the west gable of the house. At stome stage, part of the laithe was taken in to the dwelling. The former service area became an entrance hall, heated by an inserted stack, and the earlier housebody became an isolated parlour with the removal of the firehood and the blocking of the original door.
