Description | The house is initialled and dated ‘A N : D M : O S F : M F : 1635 B T’, and the cottage was probably added in the early 18th century. There is large dressed stone to the house and hammer dressed stone to the cottage, with stone slate roofs. The building is two storeys high with a two cell gable entry plan that is double depth with two gabled wings to the rear. There are three first floor windows, a plinth and a cavetto moulded string course. All the windows except one are double chamfered mullioned and transomed windows. The first cell has a six light with a king mullion and a six light above. The second cell has an eight light with a king mullion and a three light fire window , with a four light and small arched light above. Set between the two cells at first floor level is a four light window. The building has coped gables with kneelers and ridge stacks. To the rear, the central bay has two double chamfered mullioned windows, one of two lights, the other of three lights, set at different levels to the first floor and probably to light the stair. Against the ground floor there is a later lean to extension filling the gap between the wings, which has a five light window. The gabled wings have kneelers, coping and stacks. The right hand return has a doorway with a basket arched lintel bearing the date inscription carved in high relief, composite jambs and a moulded surround (cyma, step, roll, step). To either side of the lintel are carved consoles decorated with a lunette and arrow head supporting a dripmould. There are altered windows in keeping, and one original window of four lights to the first floor. |
