TitleThe Orchard
DescriptionThere is no description of this cottage in the folder. However, there are photographs and an interpretation of a wooden mullioned window that was uncovered in one of the walls. The window had unglazed diamond set wooden mullions. Unfortunately it has since been converted in to a fireplace in the mistaken belief that the former blocked opening was a fireplace.
During the late 16th century, there was a cross over period when wooden mullioned windows were used in conjunction with stone walls from the outset (Thornborrow, 2001). It is therefore assumed that at least the wall containing the window dates from c.1600 or slightly earlier. It does not imply that the building was timber framed originally.
