Description | This board school was built in 1877, with additions and alterations in 1882, 1897 and in the 20th century. It is built of rock faced stone, with ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs. It has been built in Renaissance Revival style. There are two major blocks on a steeply sloping site. The left block is a single storey high plus a basement. It is 7 x 3 bays, has a chamfered plinth, sill band, string course and eaves detail. It has hipped and gabled roofs with coped gables and two coped ridge stacks. The windows are mainly cross mullioned, with stone mullions and transoms, and some being reglazed in the late 20th century. The basement has a central double door and a glazing bar overlight in a plain chamfered surround. The right block is also a single storey high with a basement. It is 6 x 3 bays and has similar detailing to the other block. It has gabled and hipped roofs with three ridge stacks, two with paired flues. In the centre, there are four round arched basement openings, glazed in. The left wing has a 20th century lean to porch. Between the main blocks, there is a stone staircase with intermediate landing, and balustrade walls with chamfered coping. To the right, there is a similar curving staircase. The rock faced stone boundary wall encloses the site, with chamfered coping and renewed railing between the piers to the front. There is gabled stone coping to the sides and rear. |
