Description | Soho Mills was built c.1850, presumably as a small textile mill, with later additional outbuildings forming an enclosed courtyard to the rear of the curtilage (WYAS, 1994). It is four storeys high and is built of sandstone ‘brick’ with ashlar dressings. It has eleven close set window bays, sill bands and spaced dentils to the eaves. It has a hipped slate roof, with flanking corniced chimneys set above the eaves. The windows have cast iron glazing bars. To the left hand side, the ground and first floor windows are combined in paired round headed arches. There is a large, semi circular, voussoir and keyed archway to the centre of the front. In the early 1980s, the ground floor front to Thornton Road was converted into offices. In 1994 (WYAS) the building was empty and in a derelict condition. In 1993 a planning application was submitted for alterations to the building to create housing units, but it is not known whether this has been carried out. |
