Title | 39-49 Bank Street, 2-18 and 47 Queensgate. |
Description | The listing for No.s 39 49 Bank Street also includes No.s 2 18 Queengate and No. 47 Queensgate. This long block is four storeys high with ashlar elevations and restrained Italianate detail. It was designed by Lockwood and Mawson in 1876. It has string courses, sill courses, a modillion bracketed eaves cornice and splayed corners, with quoin pilasters with grooving. The windows to the upper floors have architrave surrounds, with console bracketed pediments on the first floor, and cornices to the second floor. There are shallow breaks with tripartite pedimented windows. There is a parapet with crested plaques, and squat pyramidal slate roofs behind the breaks. No. 49 has a finely carved architrave doorway with scroll brackets to the pediment above. No. 41 (The Bradford Club at the time of the English Heritage survey in 1983) has a good fluted Roman Doric columned doorway with a segmental pediment. The south end to Hustlergate, No. 39, is canted. There are similar elevations to Queensgate. |
