Title1-17 Queensgate and 53-59 Kirkgate
DescriptionThis group of buildings are unlisted but are immediately adjacent to No.s 39 49 Bank Street, which are listed buildings, along with No’s 2 18 Queensgate and 47 Queensgate (PRN 8573).
The whole frontage on the west side of Queensgate appears to be of a single build, probably c.1870 when most of the buildings in the area were built. The buildings step up the steep slope of the street in six stepped stages. They are of three storeys with three bay frontages featuring triple arched windows in the upper storeys.
The buildings on Kirkgate are of lesser interest. Being immediately adjacent to some new development, development proposals for a new build here may be more acceptable. Set between is Albion Court, which is an attractive paved yard with a U shaped end to the south where it meets an interesting L shaped group of buildings. These buildings feature an 8 light window at the first floor level that is articulated by fluted pilasters.
In 1999 ASWYAS carried out an archaeological watching brief at the site prior to proposed redevelopment (PRN 6906). It is not known whether this redevelopment took place or not.
