Description | This substantial house was built by William Rookes in 1643. It is built of sandstone rubble and has a U shaped plan. The recessed centre is two storeys high with an attic, with three storey gabled wings either side. The left wing has large mullioned and transomed windows, with a West Riding gable window of four lower lights and two upper. There is a moulded doorway with a four centred arch in a squared head, ornamental spandrels, and a lintel inscribed 1643. The right hand wing was remodelled later in the 17th century with three lofty single mullion and transom windows, and a gable window as in the other wing. A continuous drip mould rises above the lower windows to four triangular pediments. The other fronts have various mullioned windows. The interior has been largely altered but there are arched stone fireplaces to the centre block on the ground and first floor, and roof trusses to the centre block and east wing. These trusses have ties, yokes supporting short king posts, a ridge and side purlins. |
