Description | This board school was built in 1873 by Milnes and France of Bradford, for the Bradford School Board. Additions were made in 1878, 1882 and 1885, and there are some minor 20th century alterations. It is built in early English Gothic style from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, and has gabled and hipped slate roofs. There are two prominent ridge stacks with clustered round shafts. The building has a plinth, quoins, buttresses and a sill band. The windows have stone mullions and transoms, and most lights have rounded cusped heads. The pointed arched openings have hood moulds. The main range has upper and lower halls arranged end to end, running parallel to the street, with a T plan central rear range. There are two projecting entrance blocks to either end of the front elevation. There are also exposed original trusses inside the building, and one moulded stone fireplace. Outside, there is a rock faced boundary wall that encloses the site, with stepped gabled coping to the sides and rear. The left return incorporates an open play shed, of four bays, with cast iron columns. There is chamfered coping to the front and left return, with incomplete original railings to the left return. To the front, there are two pairs of octagonal stone gate piers topped with pinnacles. |
