Description | This building was de listed in 1997, but did also include No. 2 Manningham Lane. This is an 1871 73 school, which forms the main block of the former Carlton Grammar School of 1830. It was designed by the Andrews and Pepper partnership. It has bold gothic detailing, particularly to the tower, which has a saddleback roof and an openwork, bartizan, spired turret to one corner. This tower rises to 110 feet and is a prominent feature. The gables are stepped with finials, and there are prominent dog gargoyles. The school extends on an L plan to the east, with linked impost pointed arched windows. To the west, forming the corner with Manor Row is the master’s home with hipped and gabled roof pitches. This building has paired mullioned windows with relieving arches and herringbone stonework to a blind pointed tympanum beneath a gable. Sandstone brick with ashlar dressings is used throughout, with slate roofs and the eaves partly corbelled. |
