TitleBehren's Warehouse
DescriptionThis is one of the largest of the warehouse/office blocks in the precinct known as ‘Little Germany’. It was designed for S L Behrens in 1873 by the Milnes and France partnership. It is five storeys high with a semi basement and attic, and is built from finely dressed ashlar sandstone. It was built in a grand but functional design with restrained Italianate details. The Peckover Street façade has 14 bays, with one window per bay. The East Parade façade has 10 similar windows. Towards the southwest end of the East Parade façade is a massive formal entry, with an adjacent wagon passage on the end. The passage opens into a covered yard with a central loading bay at basement level with hoist above. The building has a prominent eaves cornice that is supported on large console brackets. The chimneys, projecting from the blue slate roof, are tall and banded with Venetian style cornices.
In 2002 a building recording was carried out prior to conversion of the warehouse to offices and flats.
