TitleRoman Coin
DescriptionStruck or hammered Roman copper alloy nummus, House of Constantine, commemorative issue of AD 330 335. The obverse side depicts a helmeted bust of Constantinople’s facing left with the inscription [CONSTANTINOPOLIS]. The reverse has Victory on a prow with sceptre and shield, symbol of the city of Constantinople, New Rome. The coin also possibly has the mint mark [TRP]?P similar to marks for the mint of Augustus Treverorum of Trier, Germany. This mint was operational from 291 AD and closed in the late 420s (Sear 2000, p.71). Discovered by a metal detectorist about 01/01/1984.
