Description | This is a long warehouse dating to 1889, which is built of sandstone ‘brick’ with ashlar dressings. The building presents a three storey frontage to Sunbridge road and, as it is built into a natural escarpment, a five storey frontage to the loading yard at the rear of the building. The internal floor divisions are of timber supported on cast iron columns. The arrangement of most floors are similar, all being of 24 bays with two rows of supporting cast iron columns. Many of the external windows and doors have recently been replaced (ASWYAS, 2005). An interesting feature of the roof is the use of arched laminated trusses. The building has a moulded cornice with spaced brackets, and a parapet with a long stone carved name panel to the centre, which is surmounted by a ram’s head crest. The narrowness of the window bays gives the impression of a pilastrade. The building has chamfered window heads with slightly curved corners. There are doorways to each end of the elevation, which have large console brackets supporting aediculed lights, at first floor level, with enriched scrolled pediments. This long front is an important element in the street picture. |
