Title | Broadgate House |
Description | The Listing also includes 2 8 Broad Street. Dated 1883, this large warehouse and chambers block is five storeys high and is built of sandstone ashlar. This is a late form of the warehouse/office type that evolved in the ‘Little Germany’ precinct. The architect was Rhodes Calvert. There is an 18 bay range to Manor Row. The building has a tall ground floor with massive piers supporting an entablature. There are sill bands to the upper floor, and large block brackets to the main cornice and parapet. The doorways have large console brackets to the pediments over. The first floor windows have stilted cambered arches rising from an impost string. There are flat consoles to the cornices over the second floor windows. The building has a splayed northern corner with one window and a plain return elevation. This building is situated on a commanding hillside site in conjunction with the Manor Buildings. In 2002, plans were drawn up that proposed the refurbishment of Broadgate House. It is not known whether this refurbishment was carried out. |
