Description | This building includes No. 19 Allerton Park, and was formerly known as Red House. It is a large house that was later used as a home for the elderly. It was built in 1903 in Queen Anne Revival style by the firm FW Bedford and SD Kitson, for Major Bagnal, who was the proprietor of Kirkstall Forge. The building has a plinth of axe faced Hopton Wood stone, walling of 1 and ¾ inch Woodville sand faced bricks and Ancaster stone dressings, and portico columns also of Hopton Wood stone with a ‘pecked’ face. The roof is of ‘Arfon’ American red slates. Inside, the hall mantelpiece is of various coloured Derbyshire marbles. The building is two storeys high, with three bays to the south front, and has a square plan with an L shaped rear wing to the northeast that encloses a small courtyard. Inside, there has been very little alteration to the original plan and decorative scheme, and the room names follow the 1904 published plan. (Text edited from English heritage LBO description). Please note, on the WYAAS GIS map (20/10/2008), the building is labelled as ‘Gledhow Manor’. |
