TitleRoman Brooch
DescriptionCopper alloy enamelled head stud brooch dating to the second century. The brooch has an integrally cast head loop and the remains of a hinged pin mechanism. The wings are rectangular in shape and stepped to the terminal. The bow is decorated with a large ring and dot at the head; this contains red enamel. Down the front of the bow there is a rectangular panel divided into cells with three lozenges in a vertical row. The lozenge shaped cells contained coloured enamel although the colour is unclear and the surrounding cells contained red enamel. The brooch has a moulded foot but the pin and catch plate do not survive. A very similar parallel can be seen in Hattatt’s Visual Catalogue, Fig.191, No.36.
