TitleWatching brief at Manor House Farm
DescriptionAn archaeological watching brief was carried out at Manor House Farm on Barnsley Road in Flockton by Archaeological Services WYAS between June 2005 and February 2006. The watching brief was carried out during groundworks required prior to the construction of 44 dwellings and garages at the site. It was believed that the site had archaeological potential due to its proximity to the remains of a 16th century Manor House found previously. The site of the 14th century village of Overhall is also thought to be nearby.
During the course of the watching brief, no evidence of the medieval village of Overhall was found. However, two archaeologically significant features were identified: a brick barrel vaulted cellar, and a brick pathway, both thought to date to the mid 19th century. Both correspond well with a structure present on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps, and it is thought that this structure may have been a later ancillary building to the 16th century Manor House.
A single sherd of late 16th or 17th century Purple Glazed pottery was also found, which was thought to have belonged to a locally made jug or small jar.
