Description | This large house is now known as St Urban’s School (RCHME, 1995). It was built in 1873 5 by John Simpson for Thomas Simpson, a wealthy Leeds solicitor. It was then altered c.1902 by Thomas Winn for Joseph Pickersgill, a wealthy race horse owner and turf commission agent. When he died in 1920, the house became the property of the Roman Catholic diocese in 1936, and was used as the Bishop’s residence. The house then became a school c.1955. The house is built of coursed rock faced gritstone, with quoins, and has a grey plain and fish scale slate roof. It is two storeys high, with central three storey entrance towers on the four bay south and three bay east fronts. It also has attics and cellars. It is built is Gothic Revival style. |
