Title | Roman T-Shaped Brooch |
Description | Copper alloy T shaped brooch dating from the 1st 2nd century (possibly a Polden Hill type). The brooch has cylindrical wings which are hollow at the back and contain a spring of 12 turns (six on each side). The spring passes through a central lug at the centre of the back of the head. The top of the bow protrudes slightly above the wings and tapers down to the foot of the brooch. There are two incised longitudinal grooves down the centre of the bow creating a raised central rib. The brooch is in good condition and has a complete solid catch plate at the foot although the pin does not survive. A similar example can be seen in Hattatts visual catalogue, Fig. 161, No. 392. Discovered by a metal detectorist before 09/05/2005. Length 61.29mm, width 30.45mm, thickness (from front to back) 19mm, Weight 15.16g. PAS Ref. SWYOR E2FC07 |
