Title | Wadlands Cottage and Wadlands Farmhouse |
Description | This early 18th century house has now been altered to form two dwellings (English Heritage, 1978). It is built of large dressed gritstone and has a stone slate roof. It is of two storeys with attics and is double pile on plan. There is a pair of central doorways, that to the right being the original, with a monolithic lintel and jambs with a narrow chamfered surround. All the windows are double chamfered mullioned windows with ovolo moulded mullions. Giles (1979) suggests that the house is not complete. He suggests that a high status house of similar age to the large late medieval aisled barn (PRN 8671) is likely to have once existed at the site. There is a large 19th century block adjoining the 18th century house, and it is thought that this block may have replaced a medieval house that originally stood there. |
