Title | Calverley House Farmhouse |
Description | This house was built c.1800 for Thomas Thornhill of Fixby Park, Huddersfield, Lord of the Manor of Calverley. It is now divided into two separate dwellings. It is built of finely dressed stone, with a Welsh slate roof, and is two storeys high with a three bay symmetrical façade. The ground floor bays have elliptical arched recesses, with a round arched doorway and fanlight in the central bay. There is a contemporary coach house to the east of the house (PRN 8662). The house was never used by Thomas Thornhill, but instead it was let out to tenants throughout the 19th century. The first Lord Masham and owner of the largest wool combing business in the world (at Manningham Mills in Bradford) was born here. (Text edited from English Heritage LBO description). |
