Description | This house is dated 1596, but Colum Giles (1980) states that its plan and details suggest a date of about mid late 17th century instead. The house is two storeys high and is built of coursed rubble masonry with a stone slab roof. It originally only had three cells, with another cell added at a later date. The earlier section has mullioned windows with semi circular heads to the lights, an arched fireplace, and a square chimney stack that is built upon a square base. The later added cell has mullioned windows, some of which now have wooden frames inserted (English Heritage, 1949). There is a lintel over the doorway that is inscribed: ‘W I V 1596’. There is also an oak post supporting a floor beam that has the initials W V carved into it. English Heritage (1949) suggest that this house was perhaps built by a Vavasour of Weston Hall. |
