Description | These building were built in the late 18th century for Joseph Musgrove as maltings, and then in 1833 Thomas Walker bought them and made a brewery through alterations and additions to the buildings. They were then converted in 1994 to a student village for Leeds Metropolitan University. The buildings are of coursed squared gritstone, with some herring bone tooling, and 20th century brickwork. They have slate roofs with some corrugated iron, felting and metal sheeting. Overall, the buildings are set out on an L shaped plan, with the tower brewery, yard entrance and office range facing Broad Lane (south), and the brewery workshop and warehouse ranges running parallel to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (east). There are also 20th century additions in the angle. (Text has been edited from English Heritage LBO description, 1987). |
