Title | 88-94 Main Street |
Description | These five cottages were originally probably three. The two oldest houses (88, 90) are dated 1748 and were built by the notable local stone mason Joshua Breare. The other two houses (92, 94) were built c.1790. They were then altered in the mid 19th century. The cottages are built of hammer dressed stone and have roofs of sandstone flags. They are two storeys high. The main interest is in the pair of original doorways with composite jambs and a deep lintel with a false ogee formed by a chamfered surround. That to the left is inscribed ‘ICM 1748’. There are also three new doorways and all the windows have been altered. There are two stacks to the ridge. There is also a small single cell cottage to the rear that has a parallel ridge. It has a gable entry with a monolithic lintel, and a first floor taking in door with composite jambs and a deep lintel. This part is ruinous, but is included in the Listing for group value. |
