Description | This double set of gate piers, with an attached retaining wall to the forecourt, was built in the early 18th century. It is of magnesian limestone ashlar, and coursed rubble. The gates at the outer entrance are guarded by a pair of sphinxes mounted on rectangular pedestals. These are linked by low walls, L shaped in plan, to a set back pair of massive clustered piers, which have pilasters on four sides and detached columns on three sides, all decorated with vermiculated bands, with a joined up entablature and a very prominent cornice. Each is surmounted by an heraldic beast displaying a shield and looking towards the house (PRN 8610). Included in the Listing is the straight retaining wall running from the outer side of these piers for the full width of the forecourt. This wall is of rubble, with a rounded coping. |
