TitleStable block at southeast corner of stable courtyard
DescriptionThis stable block was probably built in the early to mid 18th century and has since been altered. It is built of coursed magnesian limestone rubble with quoins and a stone slate roof. It has a square plan and is two storeys high with four bays. The west front to the courtyard has four stable doors in a blocked arcade of four elliptical headed arches. There are two two light windows at first floor level between the first and second, and the third and fourth bays. It has a pyramidal roof with an apex chimney.
The stable block appears to have been built as an open arcaded cart house, and it is marked on the survey of gardens by Detmar Blow c.1907 as ‘Whippers in’ (English Heritage, 1986).
