TitleThe Water Filter House, Gilstead Filter Beds
DescriptionIn March 2003, ARCUS were commissioned to undertake archaeological building recording of the redundant water filtration house located at Warren lane Filter Beds in Gilstead prior to its demolition.
The early 20th century filter house was designed for pressurised filtration to clean and purify raw water for supply to the surrounding district of Gilstead. The original design appears to have been for a total of eight water filtration tanks, arranged in two rows along the length of the building. A central duct housed the pipes to carry the raw and filtered water through and out the building. A sunken culvert along the internal east elevation provided space for the mixing of alum and lime to act as coagulants to enhance the purification process.
During the 1980 90s the interior was radically altered, in a way which suggested that the use of the main hall for pressurised filtration became redundant at this time.
