| Title | Excavation of three round barrows near Bullerthorpe Lane |
| Description | Three round barrows on land adjacent to Bullerthorpe Lane. The three barrows had been identified in aerial photographs as crop marks (PRNs 1345 and 1346) and were excavated in advance of development. The excavation was undertaken by WYAS in March 2003 (PRN 7327).
Barrow 1 (SE 3767 3276) was the most southerly in the linear 'cemetery', with a ring ditch measuring an average of 0.50m in depth and 1.70m in width. The ditch has an external diameter of 12.65m, enclosing a central area with a diameter of 8.50m.
Barrow 2 (SE 3765 3281) was the central barrow and had a ring ditch measuring an average of 1.0m in depth, and 3.6m in width. The ditch had a diameter of c.16m and surrounded a central area with a diameter of c.9.80m.
Barrow 3 (SE 3764 3283) was the most northerly of the three, with a ring ditch measuring an average of 0.65m in depth and 2m in width. The ditch has a diameter of c.11.85m and surrounded a central area with a diameter of c.7.75m.
Although no central burials survived within the areas bounded by the barrow ring ditches, Barrows 1 and 2 each contained features which may represent the ploughed out and/or re cut remains of grave cuts. A single sherd of probably beaker pottery was recovered from a shallow pit in Barrow 2, indicating that the feature may have once contained an Early Bronze Age Beaker burial. The ring ditches of Barrows 1 and 2 appeared to have been re cut, and other later features included the severely truncated remains of an inhumation which had been inserted into the upper fill of the ring ditch of barrow 1. |
