Description | Two of seven Pre Conquest cross fragments found at St Oswald's Church, Collingham. These two fragments are from the same shaft, known as the 'Runic Shaft'. The cross fragments are still in the church. The shaft stands roughtly 135cm high, and is made of coarse, but fine grained gritstone (similar to the Apostles Stone PRN 3417). At the top of one aide is what Collingwood (1914) describes as a 'beast', similar beasts can also be seen at the bottom of this side. All these creatures have a spiral at the shoulder, which is a common feature of Celtic work, or Viking work with Celtic influence. The scroll pattern on one side is, according to Colingwood (1914), characteristic of the late 9th Century. The work appears to be chiselled throughout. |
