Title | Geophysical Survey on Land Surrounding Austhorpe Hall |
Description | A geophysical survey was carried out by WYAS in May 2004 on land surrounding Austhorpe Hall as part of an ongoing multi disciplinary research project into the archaeology surrounding the hall. The study area, centred on the above grid reference, covers an area of approximately 3.5 hectares. For the magnetic survey, a Geoscan FM36 fluxgate gradiometer was used taking readings at 0.25m intervals on zig zag traverses 1m apart within 20m by 20m square grids. A resistance survey was also undertaken, but the methodology for this is not given in the report. To the north of the hall the geophysics did not significantly add to existing knowledge, with an already known trackway and areas of ridge and furrow being located. South of the hall the survey identified anomalies which represent areas of the 1694 gardens. The survey was of most use locating an enclosure complex and ditched field system to the southeast of the hall. These features which may date to the Iron Age/Romano British period were previously unknown. The square enclosure (c.SE 3705 344) was defined by a series of three parallel ditches, each approximately 5m apart. The enclosure was divided in half by an internal ditch aligned from east to west; the eastern terminal of this ditch also appears to mark the main entrance into the enclosure. Immediately west of the enclosure a linear anomaly aligned from north to south and a second intersecting anomaly have been identified. These were interpreted as ditched land divisions probably associated with the enclosure complex. |
