TitleEvaluation at Simpsons Maltings, Pontefract
DescriptionAn evaluation was carried out by AOC Archaeology during August and September 2004 within the grounds of the disused Simpsons Maltings, Pontefract in advance of redevelopment. The site, centred on the above grid reference, is located on the eastern side of Pontefract and forms a strip of land measuring 1.7 hectares. It is bounded to the north by the railway and to the south by Ferrybridge Road.
A total of 13 trial trenches were excavated, all measuring 2m x 10m (with the exception of trenches 4 and 6 which measured 2m by 5m and 2m and 3m respectively). All trenches were excavated using a wheeled JCB fitted with a 1.6m wide toothless ditching bucket under archaeological supervision. The machine excavation was carried out by hand cleaning where necessary.
The evaluation showed that the development site contained medieval remains deriving from the period c.1200 1500, which is broadly contemporary with the occupation of the medieval priory of St. John (PRN 2088) which lies to the south of the development area. The remains encountered included ditches and pits. Clear evidence for medieval structures was lacking. The archaeological remains were confined to the west and east of the site. The features produced medieval pottery, animal bone and brick fragments. For a detailed description of the results see the report in file.
