Title | Plainville House, aka Park House, Pool Court and Monkmans, Pool |
Description | Pat Lazenby provided a short history of Plainville House in 2000 prior to the demolition of the house in 2002. An extract from this reads; We can only assume that the house was originally built c 1684 as in 1929 there was a sundial bearing this date. We do know that the house as it is now was not the original as the old foundations are still visible (see photo) also the beautifully vaulted cellars some 3 ft thick, are still there from the original house. The vaulted cellars suggests 1700s, unfortunately I have not been able to secure a photo of these, but I have recently visited them and some 5 years ago they were used as a dining hall for the restaurant. There is what appears to be an old church font at the front of the house, which has been there for at least 50 years and may be much longer. The fountain is not original. John Milthorpe (1768 1847) bought the 'old' Plainville from John Maude in the early 1800s with money left to him by his father William (1731 1801)., demolished it and built the 'new' Plainville. The new house is very grand and has an impressive entrance hall in beautifully hewn stone no doubt from Pool Quarries. Thos. Chippendale was living in Otley around that time and the drawing and dining rooms were furnished with his work. Plainville is show on the 1st Edition OS Map (1848). A copy of the above information containing further details of the families who lived at the house is held at the offices of West Yorkshire HER. |
