TitleWatching Brief Hillcrest Mount, Castleford
DescriptionA watching brief was carried out by WYAS between 27th August and 18th September 2002 prior to the construction of five residential buildings on land at Hillcrest Mount, Castleford.
The area of housing plots 2, 3, 4 and 5 was stripped to the natural using a 360 degree mechanical excavator with a 2.00m ditching bucket under archaeological supervision. Plot 1 was not monitored as it lay in the footprint of a previous building. All exposed surfaces were hand inspected for archaeological remains. All features encountered were excavated and recorded.
In plot 2, two garden features and a number of features that may have been post holes were uncovered. The post holes consisted of 8 circular or sub circular holes which may have formed a fence line aligned north south, they measured between 0.35 0.6m in width and 0.154 0.42m in depth. One post hole contained 7 sherds of pottery which may have been later prehistoric or post Roman in date.
The dimensions of the plots are not given, but a location plan is provided in the watching brief report (see file).
