Title | Watching Brief at Bentley Grange, Emley |
Description | A watching brief was carried out by WYAS on the 7th November 2001 during the installation of a septic tank at Bentley Grange, Emley. The installation area of the septic tank was located approximately 21m west of the house within the south eastern corner of a field. The service trench ran from the tank to a manhole at the eastern side of the house. An archaeologist monitored the excavation of the holding trench for the septic tank and the excavation of its service trench. The holding trench was excavated with a JCB fitted with a 0.75m wide toothed bucket and measured 2.5m by 2.5m and was 3m deep. The service trench was also excavated with a JCB and measured 29m long, 0.75 wide and 0.5m deep. At the eastern end of the service trench a deposit was identified which seemed likely to represent the residue from a bell pit within the area, and an inspection of the surrounding bell pit earthworks revealed similar deposits within eroded areas of bell pit banks. It seemed likely that this deposit had derived from a bell pit bank on the eastern side of the house which may have been flattened and spread out during or prior to the construction of the house. |
