Title | Watching Brief at Spink Lane, Pontefract |
Description | A watching brief was carried out by On Site Archaeology on 10th and 11th September 2001 during groundworks associated with the construction of flats on a site at Spink Lane, Pontefract. The development area comprises of a rectangular plot bounded by Northgate to the north and Spink lane to the east. The total area of the site is some 65m by 35m. Overburden was removed by a 360 degree tracked excavator fitted with a toothless bucket down to the level of the first visible archaeological horizon. Exposed surfaces were then cleaned by hand in order to detect any archaeological features. During the excavation of a sloped profile to allow and access ramp (approximately 23m south along the eastern site boundary) a small patch of yellowish sandy clay with frequent charcoal flecking was identified measuring 0.90m by 0.80m, no finds were discovered and due to the small area of exposure it was impossible to establish a date. During an excavation of a service trench at the east of the site three small post holes were discovered, cut into a deposit containing 12th 13th century pottery. All were rectangular in plan and situated close to one another in an area measuring 2.50m by 1m. No dimensions of the trenches or individual postholes are provided but location plans are given in the report (See file). |
