Title | Watching Brief, in the car park of 2 - 28 The Calls, Leeds |
Description | A watching brief was carried out by Field Archaeology Specialists (FAS) on the 14th August 2001 during geotechnical investigations undertaken in the car park of 2 28 The Calls, Leeds. The site covers an area of 0.5 hectares. 3 test pits were positioned to answer specific questions relating to the location and nature of underlying foundations and structures. The test pits were archaeologically monitored in order to identify any archaeological features. Test pit 1 was excavated by a mechanical excavator fitted with an 0.80m toothed bucket and was positioned to expose the southern wall of a post medieval goit (or canal) which was shown on early Ordnance Survey maps running from east to west along the back of the buildings which front The Calls. Test Pits 2 and 3 were hand excavated and were located at different points against the southern walls of the buildings which front The Calls. Test pit 1 measured 7.0m long, 3.05m wide by 2.0m deep at its southern end and 1.0m wide by 3.2m deep at its northern end. Test pit 2 measured 0.7m long, 0.4m wide and 0.9m deep. Test pit 3 measured 0.45m long, 0.65m wide and 0.45m deep. The sandstone walls of the goit were uncovered in Test Pit 1. There were no datable artefacts uncovered, but it is thought that its construction must postdate the Aire and Calder Navigation Act of 1699, and it is shown on a plan of 1725. Other structures located in this test pit are shown on maps of Leeds dating from 1831. No deposits or features, which could be dating before 1700, were observed during the watching brief. |
