TitleWatching Brief, rear of Black Bull Public House, Wetherby
DescriptionA watching brief was carried out by Alison Clarke between 29th June and 3rd July 2000 during groundworks for a small extension to the rear of the Black Bull Public House, Wetherby. The new building was to be a single storey construction 3.9m wide by 7.1m long with strip foundations, attached to the back of an existing building.
Two foundation trenches were excavated, one running north south (7.1m long) and the other east west (3.9m long). Both trenches were between 0.48 and 0.67m wide and between 0.50 and 0.68m deep.
The area of the proposed building had been utilised for a number of purposes in the past. The top 30cm of the soil/fill mainly reflected 20th century changes of use. The lower levels appeared to be a build up of soil and occupation debris consistent with the use of the yard as an open space, probably from at least the late medieval period. Two sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from the lower fill of the shorter trench.
