Title | Watching Brief, Mickletown Road, Methley |
Description | A watching brief was carried out by AOC Archaeology on 2nd May 2000 during the capping of a mineshaft at Mickletown Road, Methley. The monitoring took place on an irregular area measuring approximately 10m by 10m around the remains of the abandoned shaft. During the first phase of the watching brief the top of the mineshaft was exposed using a back acting JCB. The position of the mineshaft was surveyed by EDM, then re covered and marked. The second phase of the watching brief involved the monitoring of the capping of the shaft. The top of the mineshaft was cleaned by hand and investigated. The disused shaft had a twin coursed circular brick structure and measured exactly 3m in diameter and was 0.26m from outer edge to inner edge. It was built in a traditional English bond style and was mortared using a coarse limestone rich mortar, the bricks were clamp made. |
