TitleWatching Brief at Pontefract Castle Keep
DescriptionA watching brief was undertaken by WYAS on 6th June 1994 during the demolition of a fragment of freestanding corework in the keep of Pontefract Castle. The freestanding corework had become unstable so Wakefield Museums applied for Scheduled Monument Consent to remove it on safety grounds.
When the demolition had stopped a trench measuring c.4m by c.2m was deturfed and cleaned to expose all the stonework and mortar below the turfline. After cleaning, the area of stones was c.1.2m by c.2.6m and this was surrounded by an area containing much mortar. No datable finds were recovered after cleaning the trench. The below ground remains were made of magnesian limestone and set on end which is consistent with 12th and 13th century corework seen elsewhere in the castle.
