TitleWatching Brief at Thorpe Business Park, Leeds
DescriptionA watching brief was carried out at Thorpe Business Park, Leeds by Northern Archaeological Associates in October 2005. The watching brief was undertaken during topsoil stripping in advance of construction work.
The Thorpe Park development is located to the west of Junction 46 of the M1 motorway to the north of Leeds. The plot of land investigated during this watching brief (centred on the grid reference above) is situated directly north of the former Barrowby Lane and comprises an irregularly shaped portion of land approximately 120 by 100m (1.2 hectares).
Topsoil stripping was undertaken using a mechanical excavator. Following the topsoil removal, archaeological features and deposits were given a cursory examination to determine the nature of the archaeology. All archaeological features were located with a TC 500 Leica Total Station linked to a computer using Penmap software.
Four circular mine shafts were identified in plan, these had diameters ranging from 1m to 4.6m. A raised trackway embankment running south west to north east was traced for a distance of 113m, it measured up to 5m wide at the base and a up to 0.84m high. A section through the embankment revealed sherds of 19th century pottery and a clay pipe stem.
