Description | In October 1999 Ed Dennison Archaeological Services (EDAS) undertook archaeological building recording at Nos. 34 44 Cross Church Street and Nos. 39 63 King Street, in advance of the re development of Kingsgate. The buildings comprise of an early 19th century domestic and retail group of buildings, and occupies the corner site of Cross Church Street and King Street. It is thought that the buildings were constructed during either the 1810s or 1820s by architect Joseph Kaye. A number of the buildings are Grade II listed. Due to access restrictions, the building recording was undertaken in two phases; the first (Nos. 38 44 Cross Church Street) occurred between 29/11/1999 and 02/12/1999, and the second phase (Nos. 34 36 Cross Church Street and Nos. 39 47 King Street) on 13/01/2000. It was noted, at the start of the recording, that all of the buildings had been unoccupied for a number of years previous, and were in some state of decay. For further detail please see the full report (EDAS, 2000), a copy of which is on file at West Yorkshire HER. |
