TitleArchaeological Field Walking, Eccup Lane
DescriptionA field walking survey organised by WYAS involving members of the YAS Roman Section was undertaken on 2nd and 3rd September 2000 at a field on the eastern side of Eccup Lane covering an area of 6.15 hectares. The site is thought to be that described by Ralph Thoresby as the Roman Town (Faull, 1981).
A 10m grid was established and tied in to local field boundaries using a Geotronics 600 series total station theodolite. Each 10m square was identified by an alpha numeric code. Each north east/south west transect was systematically walked and the finds were bagged and labelled with the appropriate alpha numeric code. The position of all recovered artefacts was therefore recorded to within a 10m square.
In total, 267 artefacts were recovered, including 33 sherds of Roman pottery, 218 sherds of Medieval and post Medieval pottery, glass fragments and building materials.
The pottery was identified and described by Jeremy Evans and Chris Cumberpatch. The Roman pottery indicated that activity at the site commenced in the 2nd century, but there is no clear evidence to suggest this occupation was continuous. The composition of the assemblage was consistent with that which may be expected from a military site.
Roman period activity was seen to be concentrated in the north western part of the field while later ceramics are distributed evenly across the site (as a result of manuring the fields with household rubbish).
