TitleExcavation of Three Round Barrows, Bullerthorpe Lane
DescriptionAn excavation of three round barrows on land adjacent to Bullerthorpe Lane was undertaken by WYAS in advance of development. The barrows had previously been partially excavated by the York Archaeological Trust. The field work was carried out between 3rd and 14th March 2003 to fully excavate the barrows ditches and to obtain artefactual and dating material from the unexcavated fills.
The excavation of the ditches surrounding three round barrows and additional excavation in the central areas revealed that these funerary monuments remained the focus of activities at the site that spanned the succeeding two millennia, and also contained residual evidence for activity on the site stretching back to the Early Neolithic. Dating evidence provided by charcoal and pottery suggested that the ring ditches of two of the barrows may have been re cut twice during the Iron Age and are associated with a rectilinear enclosure. However, the enclosure may date to the dark ages and may be contemporary with an inhumation that was inserted into the ring ditch of barrow 1, which was radiocarbon dated to 810 1000AD (Beta 204159).
Artefacts including slag (Iron Age), flint (Neolithic) and pottery (Bronze Age) were recovered from the three barrows.
