TitleGeophysical Survey on Land North of Main Street
DescriptionA geophysical survey was undertaken by WYAS at land to the north of Main Street, Burley in Wharfedale prior to development between 6th and 11th November 1992. The site represents a corridor 650m long and consists of 4 fields used for rough grazing, the survey covered an area of 4 hectares. The survey was undertaken using two Geoscan FM36 Fluxgate Gradiometers combined with ST1 sample triggers. A base line was established along the northern edge of the site and blocks made up of 20m by 20m grids were laid out from this using a Topcon EDM.
The majority of anomalies detected during the course of the survey were either related to agriculture practices during the medieval period or to services and ferrous objects in the topsoil. Only one anomaly was interpreted as archaeological and may have formed part of a larger enclosed area, it consisted of a linear ditch running north south (approximately 600m long) with a gap approximately half way along its length (NGR c. SE 1655 4663).
