TitleArchaeological Evaluation on land at Back Northgate, Pontefract
DescriptionAn evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken by Foundations Archaeology on land at Back Northgate, Pontefract in November 2002. The overall area investigated was c.2.6 hectares.
The evaluation indicated that a low level of archaeological activity was present across the site area.

A substantial cut, aligned north east south west, along the entire south east end of Trench 1 was securely dated to the Modern period and was probably associated with the construction of the retaining wall which forms the south eastern site boundary. Another linear cut, aligned north south in Trench 2 was also dated to the Modern period.
The evaluation indicated that no archaeological activity, prior to the 19th Century, was present in the study area. A combination of area stripping, possibly associated with terracing, gas works activities and service/utility cuts are likely to have caused significant damage to any ephemeral archaeological remains.
